This week our learning target is "I can locate selected features of Southwest Asia (the Middle East)." Students have been working hard memorizing the locations of Turkey, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan. In addition, students must know selected physical features of the region: Jordan, Euphrates and Tigris Rivers, Mediterranean Sea, Suez Canal, Red Sea, Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and the Arabian Sea.
Students have labeled political and physical maps and glued them into their interactive notebooks. Each day for the warm-up and closing this week, there have been geographic practice questions. And lastly, my FAVORITE, students are working on treasure maps of the Middle East! They label the map, design a path to the treasure, and write instructions on how to find it. Some students authenticate their maps by burning them, crumpling them up, rolling them up and sticking the maps in bottles. The kiddos really enjoy this activity and it taps into their wells of creativity! Most importantly, they are applying their geographic knowledge of the region and moving towards mastery of the learning target.
