Black history month coincided with my economics unit and we ended the unit with a research project on local African American entrepreneurs. My students never cease to amaze me as they reached out to black-owned business across Columbus and Phenix City, interviewed them and even coordinated speaking engagements during their class time! Proud of my kiddos!!! Special shoutout to Sherrika Day, Mack Couture, The Nappy Root, Innovative Supplies and SAJ Cleaning Service to taking the time to share your entrepreneurship with the students of FSLMA! As an alternative to researching local entrepreneurs, students could delve into a black entrepreneur from the past or the present.
I wanted this economics unit to be especially relevant so that my students could connect to the content: the economic impact of entrepreneurship, the human capital and capital goods associated with running a business, and most importantly I wanted my students to see themselves reflected in our community and economy. The social studies fair this year has been quite challenging! With so many changes at our school and me having additional school duties as well as a very involved 11-year old, I felt like social studies preparation was not its best this year. Even though we (myself and the students) struggled this year, we have also seen the most success in the process since I've been social studies department chair. We have two projects that placed first in the district fair and have advanced to the southwest regional fair in Perry, Georgia and one project that placed second in the district fair. I am VERY proud of my students. Their hard work and dedication rose above our obstacles this year and I am so happy to see their advancement in this competition. **Updates: Xavier Green placed first in the Regional Social Studies Fair in Perry, Georgia. Dhruvi Patel placed 2nd. A big congratulations to these hardworking students! Xavier Green, 6th grader, 1st place Regional Social Studies Fair. Way to represent Fort! Dhruvi Patel, 8th grader, 2nd place Regional Social Studies Fair. Way to represent Fort! Congrats Xavier and Dhruvi on a job well done! Dhruvi Patel, 8th grader, 1st place at FSLMA's social studies fair & 1st place at district fair Xavier Green, 6th grader, 2nd place at FSLMA's social studies fair & 1st place at district fair Victoria Fletcher, 6th grader, 3rd place at Fort's social studies fair & 2nd place at district fair
The following rap covers all economics vocabulary that students will need to know for the entire school year! Hook: Imports and exports, imports and exports
Buying goods, selling goods, making money cause cash rules Verse 1: The economy, making money, going to work, buying, selling, trading everything Produce is to make, Distribute is to sell, Consume is to buy so we stay looking fly Ok, Gross Domestic Product better known as GDP is all the goods and services produced within a country Every society, has its own economy and a system that helps them provide the people with what they need A traditional economy is just like the name, it’s based on tradition and keeping things the same In a command economy the government controls, what is produced and sets the prices to be sold In a market economy consumers have the right to decide what is produced and what they want to buy If you take market and command and put them both together, you’ll have a mixed economy which makes trading better… Or maybe the best, put your goods to the test, can they beat all the rest? No time for rest, use that time to invest and from there you’ll progress From the U.S. to Canada from Canada to Mexico all across the globe, consumers trying to get to those... ~Back to the Hook~ Verse 2: Different countries specialize in making different products from oil, gas, food, diamonds even electronics Specialization is when a country makes certain products best and uses them to trade In order to trade, internationally, you must exchange your currency which is another name for money But HOLD UP!.....you might run into an issue, different trade barriers can stop trade with you A tariff is a tax placed on imported products to make them more expensive and protect local business A quota sets a limit on how much can be imported and also produced so local products can be used. An embargo's when a country stops trading with another to hurt their economy so it can’t recover There are a few more things that I think you should know, like factors that help the economy grow: Business, training, and literacy Technology, factories, and machinery All of this affects jobs and the GDP This is everything to know about the ECONOMY! In unit 4 we are focusing on different forms of government. This is generally a hard concept for kids to grasp so today we created diagrams of autocratic, oligarchic and democratic governments using...GUMMY BEARS! After creating the gummy bear diagrams, students had to explain in their interactive notebooks (ISNs) how their diagrams represented the various types of government. Students were highly engaged in this activity and a bonus incentive was that they could eat the gummy bears at the end of class if all of the diagrams and writing were correct. **Lyrics go to instrumental “Handsome and Wealthy”**
HOOK: ONE person rules in an au-to-cracy A FEW people rule in an ol-i-gar-chy Surrounded by the PEOPLE in a de-mo-cra-cy: Two types—presidential, par-lia-men-tary Is it cause they get to vote in an election? (an election) Which form of government is best can you tell me? (can you tell me) I won’t know what you think ‘til you tell me The forms of government song are you with me? ~Verse 1~ Different governments distribute power differently In Confederation, federal or un-i-tary Unitary- central gov Regional- confederation Federal- power shared like in the Russian Federation Citizen participation’s part of government too Its based on what the citizens can and cannot do: The right to run for office, right to vote and free speech but Human rights are not always guaranteed (ONE person rules…) ~Verse 2~ Autocratic system there’s a limited role Citizens have few rights, participation is low The situation is the same in an ol-i-gar-chy Just a small group of people run the whole country (pause) In a democracy it’s all about the people, They have many rights and personal freedoms People have the right to vote and choose who the leaders are Representatives make the laws (ONE person rules…) ~Verse 3~ Presidential system there’s a sep-ar-ate vote For the legislature THEN for the president YO! In par-lia-men-tary things go kind of differently The legislature chooses the prime minister, carefully Yes par-lia-men-tary exists in many countries: U.K., Canada, Australia and Germany Mexico and Brazil, federal re-pub-lics Cuba is communist, you know this! (ONE person rules…) ~Repeat hook for the last time~

LanguageOne of my favorite things to teach in social studies is about human culture. I shared that passion last week with students as we covered languages, religion and standard of living in Europe. Students learned about English, German, French, Italian and French and their linguistic roots. We even learned a little German, Russian and French (thanks to YouTube) and watched a music video in French! English and Germanic are categorized as Germanic languages. Italian and French are Romance languages. Russian is a Slavic language. Students should be able to categorize each language as Germanic, Romance or Slavic. ReligionReligion is the next cultural characteristic we learned about. Judaism, Christianity and Islam are in the Georgia Performance Standards so like a tell my students "I am teaching NOT preaching." Students should be able to differentiate between the religions by factors such as founder, holy book and basic beliefs and practices. The majority religion in Europe is Christianity, mainly Roman Catholicism and Protestant as seen in the map below: Standard of LivingStandard of living is the last cultural characteristic we discussed .The Georgia Performance Standards focuses on literacy rate (the ability to read and write over the age of 15) as a major factor that affects standard of living. The correlation generally goes like this: If a country has a high literacy rate then it will most likely have a high standard of living. If a country has a low literacy rate then it will most likely have a low standard of living. Discuss with your child how the ability to read and write affects people, a community and a nation. Check out the literacy rates below. How does Europe compare to North America? How does Europe compare to Africa and parts of Asia?
In order to do well on the Unit 2 Assessment on Thursday, students should know the causes, effects and locations of the following environmental issues: 1. Acid rain 2. Air pollution (smog) 3. Nuclear disaster 4. Deforestation 5. Oil pollution 6. Water pollution 7. Extraction of natural resources Please go over the Power Points (links below) and review each environmental issue! Students will be completing review activities in class and will have a study guide to review at home as well. The answers to the study guide are available below. Please use the answers as a resource and get the information into your BRAIN!
Homework for the next 2 weeks! This song focuses on all of the environmental issues we've been learning in this unit. Please memorize the lyrics! Hook: Acid rain up in Germany

They need new types of en-er-gy Like wind and solar ‘cause it’s clean Gotta go green if you know what I mean Build more efficient industries Canada also has acid rain too (pause) high levels of SO2 Property can be damaged too Like landmarks, art and statues ~Back to the Hook~ Verse 2: Don’t forget Chernobyl Radiation causing tumors A nuclear reactor at the power plant exploded We’re not done with Eu-rope The UK air’s poll-u-ted Vehicle emissions can cause asthma and pneumonia They be coughing so much (cough, cough) Nose and eyes be burning From all the car exhaust and factory pollution The air quality’s improving Fossil fuels re-duc-ing Cleaner coals, electricity the UK now is using ~Back to the Hook~ Verse 3: (Whoop!) Probably ‘bout to cut another tree down (tree down) Brazil do it too much (Whooop!) Tell me how we gone breathe (gone breathe) when we ain’t got no trees?! And I don’t even live in Brazil but I still gotta breathe though (breathe though) 20 percent of world’s oxygen comes from the Amazon, yo!
