In unit 4 we are focusing on different forms of government. This is generally a hard concept for kids to grasp so today we created diagrams of autocratic, oligarchic and democratic governments using...GUMMY BEARS! After creating the gummy bear diagrams, students had to explain in their interactive notebooks (ISNs) how their diagrams represented the various types of government. Students were highly engaged in this activity and a bonus incentive was that they could eat the gummy bears at the end of class if all of the diagrams and writing were correct.

HOOK: ONE person rules in an au-to-cracy A FEW people rule in an ol-i-gar-chy Surrounded by the PEOPLE in a de-mo-cra-cy: Two types—presidential, par-lia-men-tary Is it cause they get to vote in an election? (an election) Which form of government is best can you tell me? (can you tell me) I won’t know what you think ‘til you tell me The forms of government song are you with me? ~Verse 1~ Different governments distribute power differently In Confederation, federal or un-i-tary Unitary- central gov Regional- confederation Federal- power shared like in the Russian Federation Citizen participation’s part of government too Its based on what the citizens can and cannot do: The right to run for office, right to vote and free speech but Human rights are not always guaranteed (ONE person rules…) ~Verse 2~ Autocratic system there’s a limited role Citizens have few rights, participation is low The situation is the same in an ol-i-gar-chy Just a small group of people run the whole country (pause) In a democracy it’s all about the people, They have many rights and personal freedoms People have the right to vote and choose who the leaders are Representatives make the laws (ONE person rules…) ~Verse 3~ Presidential system there’s a sep-ar-ate vote For the legislature THEN for the president YO! In par-lia-men-tary things go kind of differently The legislature chooses the prime minister, carefully Yes par-lia-men-tary exists in many countries: U.K., Canada, Australia and Germany Mexico and Brazil, federal re-pub-lics Cuba is communist, you know this! (ONE person rules…) ~Repeat hook for the last time~ |
