These past couple of days our learning target has been "I can explain how water pollution and unequal water distribution impacts irrigation and drinking water." In the Middle East, water is SCARCE. The region has a hot, desert climate and some areas only receive 10 inches or less of rainfall a year! Major sources of fresh water like rivers and lakes are becoming increasing polluted with industrial and human waste. Fresh water is also distributed unevenly, meaning not everyone has the same access to water. Some countries, like Turkey, have a good supply of water compared to Saudi Arabia which has no natural rivers and must rely on aquifers and desalination. When discussing water needs in Southwest Asia, I emphasize the need for drinking water (human survival) and irrigation (farmers need to irrigate or water the fields on which crops grow to provide food). Environmental issues are categorized under the geography domain and geography makes up 35% of the 7th grade social studies GMAS. In order for students to memorize vocabulary words and learn important concepts concerning water scarcity in the Middle East, I have created a rap entitled, "Water So Scarce." Students should have a copy of the lyrics at home but I have also provided the lyrics in the info box. Enjoy!

If we talk about the world, ZLD has become necessary in India during the last decade due to heavy contamination of local waters by industrial wastewater in order to ensure the future of their rivers and lakes.
